History of the Department

Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine Department of Ophthalmology was founded in 1977 by Prof. Dr. İhsan ÖGE. Since its establishment, our clinic has been successfully carrying out the functions of student and specialist education, scientific research activities, providing up-to-date health services and raising role models for the society, which are the basic duties of university clinics.

Our clinic provides inpatient services with 23-beds, 2 operating rooms, outpatient eye clinic and specific units (Glaucoma, Strabismus, Uvea-Behcet's, Retina-Vitreous, Neuro-ophthalmology, Contact Lens, Oculoplasty, Cornea, Ocular electrophysiology). Each unit is run by faculty members who are experts in their field. Specialist training is also carried out by distribution and rotation in these areas. Today, our clinic; provides services with 11 faculty members, 21 fellows, and a total of 24 nurses and staff. Our clinic, located in the most established university of the Black Sea Region and serving a wide geographical region, has also been successfully carrying the responsibility of being the reference clinic in the region for years.

Services Provided

1-In our general outpatient clinics: eye patients who apply for the first time with all kinds of eye complaints are examined, if necessary, they are given glasses or if there is a more serious problem, they are referred to the unit outpatient clinics.

2-Retina Unit: Prof. Dr. Yüksel SÜLLÜ, Prof. Dr. Hakkı BİRİNCİ, Associate Professor Özlem E. YÜCEL and Associate Professor Nurullah KOÇAK are the administrators of this unit, and diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases related to diabetes, macular degeneration, intraocular hemorrhages, and congenital retinal diseases are carried out. Intraocular injections, eye angiography and laser procedures are performed. Detachment and vitrectomy surgeries are performed alone or together with cataract surgery. Congenital cataract surgeries and all kinds of intraocular lens applications are performed.

3-Glaucoma Unit: Prof. Dr. Nurşen ARITÜRK and Assistant Professor Bilge ERAYDIN are the administrators of this unit. In this unit, diagnosis and treatment are provided for all types of increased eye pressure. Laser applications in the treatment of increased eye pressure, visual field interpretation; congenital and adult glaucoma surgeries and cataract surgeries are performed.

4-Cornea Unit: This unit is under the management of Professor Ertuğrul CAN. Outpatient eye examinations, corneal transplantation (popularly known as eye transplantation) surgeries, cross-linking (radiation therapy) applications for keratoconus patients, hard contact lens applications for keratoconus patients and cataract surgeries are performed.

5-Neuro-ophthalmology Unit: This unit is run by Prof.Dr.İnci GÜNGÖR. Diseases affecting the optic nerve, unexplained loss of vision, causes of diplopia are investigated, and electrophysiological tests of the eye (tests that electrically measure visual functions such as VEP, ERG, multifocal ERG) are performed.

6- Strabismus Unit: This unit is under the management of Associate Professor Leyla N. ŞAHİN. Examination, diagnosis and treatment of all types of strabismus are carried out. Treatment with glasses, prisms, botulinum toxin injection and/or strabismus surgery are among the treatment choises.

7-Contact Lens Unit: It is run by Prof. Dr. İnci GÜNGÖR. Daily contact lens applications, contact lens treatments for babies after congenital cataract surgery, contact lens treatments for very high myopia and hyperopia are performed.

8-Uvea Unit: It is run by Prof. Dr. Yüksel SÜLLÜ and Associate Professor Hilal E. ÖZTÜRK. Diagnosis and treatment of uveitis patients, and cataract surgeries are performed successfully when necessary.

9-ROP Unit: It is run by Associate Professor Özlem E. YÜCEL. Diagnosis, follow-up and treatment of the condition called "premature retinopathy", which is seen in prematurely born babies, is carried out.

10-Oculoplasty Unit: It is run by Associate Prof. Dr. Volkan YETER. Periorbital (around the eye) tumor and tear duct surgeries are performed in the this unit.

Application Method

Our general outpatient clinics have been operating by e-appointment and telephone appointment since the beginning of 2018. It is planned to switch to this system for unit appointments in the near future, and for now it works with the appointment system given by the polyclinic secretariat.
