History of the Department
Department of Urology started operating in 1978 under the chairmanship of Dr. Sacit YILDIZ. When it was established, in addition to two outpatient clinics, a service with a total capacity of 15 beds, 8 of which were adults and 7 of which were children, and urological health services in the central operating room, urology internship and internship training began to be provided to 5th and 6th year medical students. While Dr. Adnan Arıcan and Dr. Ekrem Özmen started their Urology Specialization training as first assistants, urology specialists Dr. Ahmet Yazıcıoğlu and Dr. Ali Gümüş served as lecturers in the Department of Urology at Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine in the first years. The first urological surgery performed in the Department of Urology, which pioneered endourological surgery in Samsun and the Black Sea region, was performed by P.K. on September 20, 1978. It is a right pyelolithotomy surgery performed on the patient named. When the Faculty of Medicine Practice and Research Hospital moved to its current buildings in the Kurupelit campus in the spring of 1986, the service bed capacity and operating room facilities also increased. There are currently 6 professors and 4 associate professors in its academic staff.
Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology has become a leading educational institution that can break new ground in Turkey and the world, where radical and reconstructive urological surgeries, percutaneous and laparoscopic urological surgery training has been provided since the 1980s. The first "Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy" (2004), "Single Port Retroperitoneoscopic Nephrectomy" (2010), "Laparoscopic Vena Cava Thrombectomy" (2017) and the first in the world "Pediatric Laparoscopic Kidney Preserving Renal Hydatid Surgery" (2005), "Pediatric Single Site Retroperitoneoscopic Nephrectomy" (2010), the first "Pediatric Laparoscopic Prostatectomy" in the world (2017) and the first "Mikroperc" (2014) in the Black Sea Region, within the Department of Urology of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine, since 2005, with the approval of the Ministry of Health. The first "Kidney Transplant Center" (2006) and the first "Laparoscopic Kidney transplant" in Turkey (2015) were successfully carried out. OMU Urology, the most developed reference center of the Black Sea region in the field of urology, is also one of the leading clinics in our country.

Services Provided
With the move of our service to a detached Urology Service with 44 beds (20 double, 4 single rooms) with toilet and bathroom on the third floor of the Faculty of Medicine Hospital in November 2007, the service quality and satisfaction of the inpatients has increased even more. Within the Department of Urology, there are the Department of Andrology and the Department of Pediatric Urology. Videourodynamics Unit, ESWL Unit, Uregenital System Ultrasound, Prostate Biopsy Unit with Transrectal Prostate Ultrasound, Daily Outpatient Unit (Chemotherapy, Flexible Cystoscopy, Biofeedback, Nephrostomy, Cystostomy etc. applications) along with normal patient examination at the outpatient clinic level, Andrology Laboratory (CASA), Color There are Doppler Ultrasound and Cavernozometry. In the operating room with live broadcast facilities, all surgeries in current urology practice in adults and children (general urology, urooncology, andrology, female urology, pediatric urology and transplantation surgery) are performed thanks to the experienced faculty staff and rich technical infrastructure. With the current capacity, approximately 2500 surgeries are performed annually. Academically, the number of publications addressed to Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine Department of Urology in the journals within the scope of SCI increases every year. Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Urology, which has adopted the mission of raising the standard of urological service, starting from Samsun and the Black Sea Region, where it has been serving since the day it was established, hosts monthly scientific meetings in Samsun and meetings and courses held in cooperation with national urology associations, thus helping the Urology Specialists in Samsun and the Black Sea Region. It also aims to contribute to post-graduate education.
Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Urology, which is preparing to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its establishment, will continue to fulfill its responsibilities to raise the Republic of Turkey to the level of contemporary civilization on the path shown by the Great Leader Atatürk.
